Australia head coach Justin Langer has confirmed that pacers Pat Cummins and James Pattinson will lead the Aussie attack in the Ashes opener in Birmingham on Thursday. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle will fight for the third slot. Langer also revealed that batsman Usman Khawaja has passed his fitness tests and will be part of the Aussie lineup in the Ashes opener that starts at Edgbaston on Thursday.
“We’ll talk to the boys in the next day or so and try and solidify the 12 anyway, so everyone’s really clear where we’re at. There’s probably three to be fair, Starcy, Peter Siddle and Josh Hazlewood for one spot. Three pretty good players to try to find a spot for, I reckon,” he said.
Asked if retaining the Ashes this summer would represent redemption for Warner and Smith in particular, Langer replied: “There’s a lot of attention on Davey and Steve. [But] I don’t think it’s redemption. They want to beat England and England want to beat us. That’s why the Ashes is so great, isn’t it?”
